When it comes to your wardrobe and life in general, designer Marc Jacobs believes “it’s all about freedom of choice.”
Here, he shares the ten choices he thinks every woman should make, like owning a polka-dot Louis Vuitton wallet, personalized stationery, and more.
Marc Jacobs has always been fashion’s cool kid—eternally adored in a supremely fickle world.
The designer celebrates the individual, especially women with a flair for artistic, even eccentric, self-expression. “I’m a bit of an exhibitionist,” he says. “I think most people like attention.’ Jacobs draws on street-style blogs and music (this season, the Oliver! Sound Track) for inspiration.
He’s currently advocating a mix of textures, with dresses in patchwork and lamé,
Dr. Seuss–style fur hats, and bell-shaped skirts that draw the eyes to the hips. “I trust my instincts,” he says. With wardrobe, he says, and life in general, “it’s all about freedom of choice.”
So what does Marc say we should all have?
MARC JACOBS DOT PERFUME
“Fragrance is part of the joy of putting together your clothes and saying, ‘This is who I am today.'”
A LITTLE BLACK DRESS
“A little black patchwork evening dress that looks like shattered jet glass.”
MARC JACOBS PILGRIM SHOE
“Jazzy shoes are always great, and I think the big rhinestone buckles are very appealing.”
A PIECE OF ART
“Having art—by Elizabeth Peyton, John Currin, and others—on my walls is a privilege.”
AMERICAN APPAREL T-SHIRT
“The fits good and there are lots of colors to choose from.”
LOUIS VUITTON WALLET BY YAYOI KUSAMA
“It represents [the artist’s]obsession with polka dots, this shape which has no end and is therefore infinite.”
A NIGHT AT A BROADWAY SHOW
“I love musicals. I mean, I really love musicals. Bob Fosse is my favorite of all time.”
